By walking to school students can help their class be named “Walkers of the Week”! On the way to school each day, walkers will get a sticker from parent volunteers, which they should hang on posters outside of their classroom. Classes will be recognized for their participation during morning announcements. Classes in each grade with the most number of walkers will have a “Walkers of the Week” banner hung over their doors. And don’t forget, on Wednesday October 7th Murray’s NEW Walking School Buses take their inaugural walk! Many thanks to those of you who are helping to support this new initiative.
Save the date to mix and mingle! During the month of October, we will be holding the Grade Level Coffees for parents. Come have coffee while you catch up with other parents in your grade; meet your Room Reps, Grade Level Reps, and the PTA Co-presidents; and say "hello" to Ms. Monaco and Mrs. Soler. Next week we will be holding the 5th Grade coffee on Monday, October 5th, and the 4th Grade coffee on Friday, October 9th. Health teacher Kathleen Dengan and DARE officer Rui Sandies will also be attending the 5th grade coffee. The other grades will hold their coffees as follows: 3rd Grade on Friday, October 16th; 2nd Grade on Friday, October 23rd; 1st Grade on Wednesday, October 28th; Kindergarten on Friday, October 30th; and SEPTA on Thursday, October 29th. They will all be at 9:15 am in the small lunchroom, except for the Kindergarten coffee, which will start at 10:00 am.

Does your child in K – 5th Grade struggle with academic or social learning differences? Come join other parents to discuss common concerns, brainstorm ideas and share strategies for raising and educating elementary age students with different learning styles and needs. The format is an open forum in which you can share perspectives with other parents, as well as lend support to each other. A trained volunteer facilitator will moderate this parent-to-parent discussion on Wednesday, October 14th from 7:30 – 9:00 pm at the Hommocks Library Presentation Room. Contact: Linda Banta at 834-7488.
The annual Bake Sale is coming soon. We still need workers for several short shifts throughout the day, as well as MANY bakers to make the event a success! We welcome anything from individually wrapped cookies, brownies, rice krispie treats, and cupcakes (no need to wrap) to larger items such as pies, cakes, and baked loaves. Please label baked goods as "contains nuts" or "nut free." Baked goods may be dropped off in the small cafeteria on Thursday morning, as early as 7:30 am, the earlier the better! Please support the PTA Bake Sale! We're counting on YOU! Workers please contact Karen Paul kapaul930@optonline.net. Bakers, please contact Lynn Zerbib lynnrz@optonline.net or Kari Waddington kariwadd@yahoo.com.
In conjunction with the Murray Avenue Book Fair, Brad Herzog will be visiting and working with our children on November 16. Brad has written more than 2 dozen children’s books, including picture books, chapter books, fiction and nonfiction, poetry and prose. His latest series of books are available for purchase and are perfect for family reading with rhyming prose for younger readers, great illustrations, and more advanced sidebar text for older readers. To learn more about Brad and his books, take a look at his website (which is very entertaining) at www.bradherzog.com. You can also check out the Murray Avenue Library site to learn more, click on Events. Book Fair Pre-Sale Order Forms will be coming home next week. Get them back early so your children can have their books signed by this dynamic author during the book fair. Brad’s books are great for holiday gifts as well. Proceeds benefit Murray Avenue PTA. For more information about Brad Herzog’s visit or the Murray Avenue Book Fair please contact Dahna Freidus, dahna.freidus@gmail.com or Robin Plonsker, rplonsker@optonline.net.
Murray Kindergartners have been working with theater movement artists Paul Rajeckas and Neil Intraub on fun exercises and games that introduce age-appropriate elements of theater and help them to practice the important life skills of “Concentration, Cooperation and Commitment.” This program culminates in a demonstration in the auditorium next Wednesday, October 7th, at 1:00 pm (or at 1:25 pm if lunch is on a rainy-day schedule). All kindergartners will be in the audience, and some will randomly be called on stage to help demonstrate exercises. Kindergarten parents are welcome to attend this demonstration. This program is sponsored by the PTA and coordinated by the PTA Cultural Arts Committee in conjunction with a committee of teachers and administrators who plan enrichment programs for every grade. Special thanks to Patrice Schwartz and to Assistant Principal Cruz Soler for making this wonderful program happen.
The Theatre Arts Committee is looking for 9 children, aged 11-17 to help behind the scenes for The Sound of Music. The positions include spotlight, lighting & sound board operation, curtain operation, and stage helpers to move scenery. It is great job for older siblings of performers or anyone who wants to earn community service credit. All helpers must attend the last three rehearsals for his/her casts (1/20 - 1/22) and all performances during the weekend (1/23 & 1/24). Any Murray sibling will be placed on the same cast as his/her family member. Please contact Amy Psaila at Psaila@optonline.net for more information if you are interested.
There will be a Westchester County Recycling event at the Village Yard, 700 Fennimore Road in Mamaroneck from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm this Saturday, October 3rd. Bring your e-waste items (old computer monitors, TVs, cell phones, small electric appliances, etc.) as well as expired medications and plastic bags, so that all can be properly recycled. The Mobile Shredder truck will also be available.
New water bottle already missing? Try the Lost & Found located in the basement next to the small gym.
Thank you to the Cassiday Studios photographers for capturing the smiling students, faculty and staff. A huge thank you to Pam Washington, Cheryl Marshall and the parent volunteers who helped style students and made the days run smoothly.
