The deadline to order Brad Herzog autographed books has been extended to Friday November 6th. Please place order forms and payment in the PTA box marked "Book Fair Pre-Sale Orders". Volunteers are still needed during the book fair: Tuesday 11/17 1:45-4 PM and 5:45-8 PM; Wednesday 11/18 5:45-8 PM; and Thursday 11/19 for cleanup 12-2 PM. To volunteer, contact Lauren Renner. For order forms and more information, look at the PTA Book Fair section.

  • No After School Clubs on Tuesday, November 3rd

Due to the 11:30 AM early dismissal for conferences, there will be no after school clubs on Tuesday, November 3rd.

Clay club - please note that there is no clay on Tuesday, November 24th; clay will meet on January 26th as a makeup. If your child attends school, but will not be attending their club that day, please contact club aide, Pam Washington or call her at 914-393-9298 as soon as possible.

  • Walking Wednesday Next Week – Join us for a Thanksgiving Walk!

Our new monthly Walking Wednesday initiative kicks off on Wednesday, November 4th. We encourage ALL Murray students to walk on these special Wednesdays. This Wednesday is our "Thanksgiving Walk", so please remember to bring a canned food item for the CAP Center. Much needed items include cans of tuna, chicken or beans. Collection boxes will be located at entrances on both Daymon Terrace and Murray Avenue. Let's show our school spirit and help those in our community. Murray walks!

  • PARP (Parents as Reading Partners) Starts Next Week

Get connected with reading! This year’s PARP will kick-off on November 5th and end on November 25th.  PARP encourages parents to be reading role models by reading every day with their kids. Look for an information packet to be sent home with your kids on November 5th. The kids will be handing in “links” for every day they read with parents, and we will be connecting them into a giant chain to hang in the front of the school. We need parent volunteers to help a few minutes each day connecting the links. If interested please contact Sue Dailey or Anne Randall

  • Art Appreciation on Friday, November 6th at 9:15 AM

Save the date for the first artist presentation to parent volunteers on Friday, November 6th at 9:15 AM in the cafeteria. The featured artist is Georgia O'Keeffe. New volunteers are welcome. Please contact Claudia Kandel with questions.

  • A+ Bonus Bucks – Only 12% of Murray Families Have Signed-up So Far!

REGISTER ONLINE FOR STOP & SHOP'S A+ BONUS BUCKS PROGRAM BY THIS SATURDAY (October 31st) AND MURRAY WILL GET CREDIT FOR YOUR FULL MONTH OF GROCERY PURCHASES! It takes less than 5 minutes and could mean significant $$ for Murray. The money will be awarded directly to the school, not to the PTA. Just follow these 4 easy steps:

  1. Start by going to www.stopandshop.com to create an account and register your shopper card. Click on the "Sign up today" link under the Sign In section in the upper right-hand corner of the page and follow the instructions. You will need to enter all 13 digits of the bar code on the back of your card, including the numbers to the far left and the far right of the bars. NOTE: if your card was previously registered online, go straight to step #2.
  2. Then click on the Our Stores tab and go to the A+ page
  3. Click on the Register Your Card button under "Join the Program"
  4. Designate our school by going to NY-Larchmont under '"Find a School ID# to select" and then click the button for Murray Avenue School. You should see a message on your screen confirming that your information has been submitted.

NOTE:  You must complete all four steps in order for Murray to get credit for your purchases.  Also, you don't have to be a Murray parent (or live in Larchmont) to support our school, so please ask your family and friends who live near a Stop & Shop store to sign up and select Murray.  If you have questions or would like help registering, please contact Ellen Howse, HowseBusiness@worldnet.att.net or call 917-446-9396.

  • American Folk Traditions are Alive and Kicking at Murray!

The Vanaver Caravan visited Murray last week. Every student watched the group sing and perform to Woody Guthrie songs. Also, ask your child about the “Yogi-isms” that hang in the hallways. Truly an American icon, Yogi Berra and his confusing truths never fail to provide food for thought. Ask your child which “Yogi-ism” is his or her favorite. It may be this one: “A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.”

Learn more about the American Folk Traditions grant awarded to Ms Dillon and Ms Nolan, and the generous support of the Mamaroneck Schools Foundation.  To see just how the grant will enhance your child's curriculum this year, look at the Cultural Arts section of this website.

  • Sound of Music Payments and Code of Conduct Due

Please place envelopes with the Code of Conduct and a check for $125 made out to "Murray Avenue PTA" in the PTA box outside the front office by Thursday, November 12th. The Code of Conduct can be downloaded from this website. Just click on the Theatre Arts tab, scroll to the bottom and click on "Download Code of Conduct." Scholarships are available and are confidential; please contact the principal's office directly. We have also made copies of The Sound of Music DVD available at the school library for Murray families to take out and watch with your performers! It is a great way to introduce them to the music and get them excited to perform.

  • Two Safety Tips

Please remember that dogs and scooters are not allowed on school property. For safety reasons, scooters are not allowed inside the building. If your child chooses to scooter to school, the scooter must either be locked up outside of the school or taken home by an adult.

Please be mindful when parking and double parking on Daymon Terrace during pick up at 3:00 PM. Unless you are parked in a legal spot, you must remain in your car. Do NOT get out of your car to pick up a child or speak with a teacher. Daymon Terrace is a narrow street and it only takes one unattended car, blocking traffic to cause a major traffic jam.

  • Lost & Found – New Location

Is your child missing a T-shirt, sweatshirt, lunch box or anything else? Check out the Lost & Found which is currently overflowing with things. It is now located in front of Mr. Stone's Art Room on the lower level.

  • Green Tigers Tip of the Week: Pest Control

Most people know that pesticides are bad for your health. People should also know that garden pesticides, mothballs, animal flea collars and other harmful products to deal with pests may increase risk for health problems, such as asthma and cancer.  Excessive exposure to some pesticides may cause acute symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting or heart irregularities.  Children are particularly susceptible.

Two good websites to find less toxic pesticides are: www.beyondpesticides.org and www.pesticide.org/factsheets.html

  • Provide Input on the Superintendent Search

The School Board will hold two open community focus groups on November 2nd and November 5th to hear what parents and community members have to say about our schools and the hiring of the next Superintendent to replace Dr. Paul Fried when he retires at the end of this school year. The November 2nd focus group will be held from 7:30-8:30 PM in the Hommocks Auditorium, and the November 5th focus group will take place from 9-10:00 AM in the Hommocks cafeteria. The Board has also posted a questionnaire on the District website at http://ww2.mamkschools.org/search/ to solicit input prior to November 6th (printed copies can be found outside Murray's main office).

  • Thank You of the Week

Thanks go out to the Grade Level Chairs for hosting all wonderful the Grade Level Coffees this month which gave us a chance to mingle with other parents, PTA reps and Murray administrators.
