  • Murray Ave Book Drive for Charity
The Murray Avenue Book Drive will be held Mon, Nov 7 through Thurs, Nov 10. We will be collecting donated elementary aged books from Murray families to be given to local school libraries in need. Last year, we collected over 500 books that benefited PS 100 in the Bronx. The books were a great resource to the school's library and classroom collections. Please clean out your bookshelves and bring in your children books to donate. Boxes will be at the main entrance by the office. Questions ? Contact Elissa Bard at elissabard@yahoo.com.
  • Join us for Coffee and Conversation
Special Ed/SEPTA is hosting a coffee at the Nautilus Diner at 9:00am on Thurs, Nov 10. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents who have a child in any grade who learns differently or who has social or other needs, whether or not the child receives support services, to meet and share insights and ideas. SEPTA members with lots of experience will be there. Join us for this informal coffee and conversation. Questions? Contact Suzanne Prigoda or Amy Lieberman.

  • Lunchtime Clubs - They're NEW!
The Murray Avenue PTA will pilot three lunchtime clubs this winter when outdoor activities may be limited. We've hired professional instructors for each of the clubs, which will meet during lunch periods in pre-assigned classrooms. Lunchtime clubs will ONLY be available with the generous support of Murray families.
  1. Chess (2nd-5thgrades) presented by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation.
  2. Beginner Spanish (2nd and 3rd grades) presented by Linguakids, LLC.
  3. Classical Kids Music (1st grade) presented by professional musician Debra Whitman.
To register and for more information, use the lunchtime clubs linkRegistration deadline is Mon, Nov 14. Questions? Contact Alex Soderlund, ansamios@hotmail.com; Pam Nodiff, pnodiff@earthlink.net; or Lee Wipper, lkwipper@msn.com.

  • Murray Ave Book Fair - Coming Soon!
The Murray Avenue School Book Fair is coming soon! Please mark your calendars:  Mon, Nov 14 - Thurs, Nov 17, with evening hours Tues & Weds, Nov 15 & 16. Stock up on all the latest children's books and holiday gifts.

We’re also looking for volunteers to help out at this year's Book Fair! Volunteers are needed anytime on Thurs, Nov 10 between 12-5pm for set up and Weds, Nov 16 from 1:45pm - 4:00pm for various tasks. Please email Ellen Kaldor (ellen@kaldor.net) if you are able to work one of these shifts to support this wonderful event.
  • Bake Sale Weds, Nov 16 - We're Adding More Healthy/Savory Items
Do you have an amazing chicken soup recipe? Is your zucchini bread out of this world? In addition to the sweet treats the kids love, this year's Bake Sale will include more savory and healthy options that parents can buy at dismissal to take home for dinner (...or breakfast, or lunch, or snacks!). We need parents to make and donate sweet or savory/healthy items. Drop off baked goods from 8:00-8:30am on 11/16 in the cafeteria; anything requiring refrigeration can be dropped off on 11/16 from 2:00-2:20pm. Questions? Contact Ann Shin (annshin99@gmail.com).
  • School Photo Make Up Days and Holiday Card Fundraising
School photos were distributed earlier this week. School Photo Make Up Day will be Thurs, Nov 17. 1) If your student was absent on photo day, we have your original order and will take your student's picture on makeup day. 2) If there is a problem with your student's original photo, we must know IN ADVANCE of makeup day, in order to retake their picture.  Place ALL, uncut, individual photos in the School Photo drawer by the main entrance with a note indicating corrections to be made on Make Up day.  You may keep the class photo.

Sibling photos were distributed last week. Get in touch with James Samela of LJ Studios (835-8383) prior to Dec 2 if you want to take a sibling photo in their studio, or need more prints or a jpeg for holiday cards.

Your creativity and support are needed for Murray's Winter Gala at Whitby Castle on Fri, Feb 10th. Think of all the fun jobs your family, friends and neighbors have, and put a donated item or package up for bid this year.

*  Major Sports or Show Tickets
*  Free Lessons or Expertise (music, interior design, cooking)
*  Unique Experiences (guided tours, entertainment packages, VIP access)
*  Vacation Get-aways
*  Luxury items
And, new this year at Winter Gala--"Count Me In" events--where Murray parents team up to sponsor events to be held at a later date, such as Girls Night Out or Backyard Bootcamp.  It’s so simple; all event proceeds are collected on Gala night. Ping pong tournament, anyone? • Box Tops for Education Earns $$$ For the Murray Ave PTA
Congratulations and thanks to all the Murray families who collected and submitted BoxTops from the many products you use everyday – you helped us raise over $400 for the Murray Avenue PTA! But we’re not done yet – there is another collection date in the spring, where we have the opportunity to earn even more dollars for the PTA. So keep buying products like Better Crocker® mixes, General Mills® cereals, Kleenex® Tissues, and Yoplait® yogurts, among others, clipping the BoxTops off the packages and bring them in to the BoxTops drawer by the front office. You can also register online using the BoxTops link to receive newsletters with monthly coupons and bonus BoxTops opportunities.  Questions? Contact Ilene Gropper at igropper@optonline.com.
  • Thanks of the Week
Thanks very much to Ilene Gropper for organizing a very successful first collection of BoxTops!
  • Green Tip of the Week
After you've finished celebrating Halloween, compost your Jack-O-Lanterns, instead of tossing them in the garbage (unless, of course, you are going to be turning them into yummy pumpkin pie). Pumpkins will break down quickly as compost in your yard, providing you with valuable nutrients for your lawn or garden. To get the best results in your compost bin, smash up the pumpkin a bit to provide more surface area. Layer with other types of materials, like shredded leaves, green weeds or grass clippings. Keep the pile moist and turn it over frequently. For additional info or to submit an idea for Green Tips, please contact Eva Ostafin at eostafin@gmail.com.
