Dear Parents,

We are pleased to present the registration packet for the Murray Avenue School PTA Fall 2009 After School Clubs which are scheduled to begin Monday, October 19, 2009.

1. ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE:
• Each child may enroll in a maximum of two clubs. Kindergarteners may enroll in spring clubs, but not in fall clubs
• Fill out the Club Application Form completely for one or two clubs. Priority will be given to children who have selected a club as their first club over children who have listed it as their second club. Please fill out ALL information.
• Please indicate an alternate club whenever possible. Not listing an alternate club does NOT exempt an application from the lottery. Alternate club choices must be on the application to be considered.
• Attach checks made out to Murray Avenue PTA. You MUST include a SEPARATE CHECK for each club AND alternate listed on the application form. Any unused checks will be destroyed.
• Forms and checks are due no later than Thursday, October 8. LATE FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED . Please drop them in the After School Club box outside the main office, or mail to:

2. LOTTERY SYSTEM:
• Any club that receives more applications than the maximum number of children allowed will go to a lottery (random drawing). Only applications received by Thursday, October 8 will be eligible for the lottery. 
• Also, please indicate an alternate club whenever possible.  Not listing an alternate club does not exempt your child’s application from a lottery.  Additional club requests will not be honored after the lottery process.
3. NOTIFICATION SYSTEM:

Assume your child is in his club(s) of choice unless you are notified otherwise on or before Wednesday, October 14 . Club assignments will also be posted on the After School Clubs Bulletin Board (opposite the library) beginning Wednesday, October 14.

4. PTA CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS:

Scholarships are available to allow all children to benefit from the After School Clubs program regardless of financial situation.  All scholarship requests are strictly confidential. Please notify Jennifer Monaco as soon as possible to request a scholarship so that your child's club choice can be included in the lottery.  Scholarships are limited to one club per child per club offering.

RULES, REGULATIONS AND PROCEDURES

• General club dates are listed on the attached calendar; however, certain clubs may have dates that vary from the calendar.  Please see individual club descriptions for any variations.  Post club dates on your family calendar.
   
• Kindergarteners are not eligible to participate in fall clubs.  They can participate in spring clubs.
  
  
• Remind your child in the morning if they have a club after school that day.  If your child gets picked up from club, remind your child to stay in the club location until they are picked up.  If you are late picking up your child, the instructor or monitor will bring your child to the main office for late pickup.
   
• Clubs will not be held on Friday, Oct 23 (emergency dismissal); Tuesday, Nov 3 (early dismissal); Wednesdays, Nov 11,18 (conferences); Wednesday, Nov 25 (early dismissal); Thursday, Nov 26, Friday, Nov 27 (Thanksgiving holiday); Wednesday, December 2 (early dismissal), Monday, Dec 14; Tuesday, Dec 15 and Monday –Friday, Jan 11-22 (play tryouts and rehearsals).
     
• Students attending clubs assemble in the auditorium immediately after dismissal.  Students sit by club in the auditorium and instructors meet them there.  Instructors escort students to club locations.  Dismissal and pick up are from club locations.
  
  
• Attendance is taken in clubs.  If your child is attending school but will not be attending club, please contact club aide, Pam Washington at 393-9298 or pwash@optonline.net to let her know.  If child is absent from club and his whereabouts cannot be determined, the club monitor will call all contact numbers and emergency numbers on file until a parent/ caregiver is reached to confirm that the child is safe.
   
  
• If school is in session but after-school activities are cancelled due to inclement weather, you will be contacted, or a message will be left, at your residence.  Please make sure your child is picked up directly after school.
  
  
• The nurse is not on duty during club time.
  
  
• Participating in After-School Clubs is a privilege.  All children are expected to behave appropriately in clubs.  Any child who compromises the safety or enjoyment of the experience for others, or is disrespectful to the instructor or other club participants, may be removed from the club with no refund of the club fee.
  
  
• Clubs end at 4:05pm, 3:35pm on Wednesdays.  Unless you have explicitly given permission on the enrollment form for your child to leave on his own, you are required to pick up your child at the appropriate room on time.  The instructor will bring children that have not been picked up on time to the office.
  
  
• A child may be picked up only by those designated on the application form. If alternate arrangements are made (such as play dates), then this must be communicated in writing to the club instructor.
  
  
• If a parent/caregiver is consistently late in picking up their child from club, that child could be removed from the club with no refund of the club fee.
  
  
• For security, two entrances will be open for club pick-up:  the main front entrance on Murray Avenue, and the entrance by Mr. Figueroa’s room on Daymon Terrace, which is the door closest to the large playground on Daymon Terrace.

Beginner and returning needlepointers welcome.  Learn the continental stitch and stitch a canvas suitable for framing.  Instructor Kate Spader of Stitch by Stitch in Larchmont is an avid needle pointer who has been stitching almost her entire life!  She is excited to share her enthusiasm and love for this art form with Murray Avenue students.

Depending on the experience levels of the children, the group may be split.

A perennial favorite and Murray’s longest-running club!  If magic is your bag, you’ll want to join magician Joe Fields and learn to do magic with coins, cards, ropes, cups, and balls, as well as impromptu magic with everyday objects. Every class is mystifying, funny, and entertaining. At the end, you will have your own bag of tricks for performing.

Each week, travel to a different region of the world and get a visit from a real LIVE animal.  Students hold and pet the animals as they learn.  Safe and fun animals like chinchilla, tortoise, blue-tongued skink, hedgehog, bearded dragon, snake and more will be seen.  Students will also keep a safari journal and do a craft project each week.

Welcome to the world of photography, where students will learn the components of a good photograph and how to get them.  This includes: lighting, reflection, posing, composition, action photos and more. Students are asked to supply their own cameras -- can be a simple 35 mm, digital, or disposable. Instructor Shirley Zeiberg is a well-known portrait, commercial and news photographer in the area.

Listen to the music and learn about the instruments and culture of other countries.  We will explore a different country each week, listening to its music and learning about its people and customs.  There will also be related hands-on activities.  Music is a great way to make a connection between ourselves and people living in different parts of the world.  Come and learn about the rhythms of Africa, Latin America and the USA among others.
