Parents as Reading Partners (“PARP”)

Parents as Reading Partners (“PARP”) is a collaborative effort among parents, teachers and the community to build a lasting reading partnership between the home and the school. PARP is a state-wide PTA administered program designed to foster the love of reading in children by asking parents to set aside fifteen minutes daily to read with their children during the program and hopefully even afterwards.

Teachers Linda DeLasho and Pam Tanenbaum launched this program at Murray Avenue School in 2008. In 2009, the PARP Committee - comprised of teachers and parents - expanded it to create an even more interactive, fun and motivating reading experience for the kids and their parents. This year the PARP theme was again "Let's Connect With Reading" and the kids handed in orange paper links each day they read with a parent. We were excited to connect all the links and hang them in the hallways. PARP ran this year from November 8 to November 22nd. It kicked off on November 8th with grade-wide assemblies during which the kids were treated to book readings by special parent guests and a "reading rap" written by Mr. Brady and other teachers.

On the last day of PARP, Monday November 22nd, the kids were encouraged to come to school dressed as their favorite book character. At the end of the day, there was a closing assembly on the big playground where the entire school saw the giant link they created, and having reached their goal of 2,010 links they watched teachers selected by the children challenge Roary the Tiger to an athletic competition. Parents were invited to watch and participate in the celebration.

Happy Reading!

Joe Brady wrote and recorded (with the students' help) a fabulous reading rap in connection with PARP 2010. Click here to listen.
