  • The Bake Sale Goes Sweet & Savory!
The Bake Sale is Weds, Nov 16, from 8:30-3pm. We need parents to donate homemade treats, store bought treats, savory items and healthy alternatives for this year's bake sale. Please drop off the baked goods in the large cafeteria at 8:30 am on 11/16. This year in addition to the sweet treats the kids love, we're featuring healthy/savory items that parents can buy at dismissal to take home for dinner - or breakfast, lunch, or snacks! The bake sale is a fun event for the kids so please send them with plenty of quarters to buy treats, hot chocolate, etc. at lunchtime. Questions? Please contact Ann Shin, annshin99@gmail.com or Donna Indellicate, donna.indellicate@gmail.com

  • What's Next for Class Photos?
Class photos came home last week. Make Up Day will be Thurs, Nov 17. 1) If your student was absent on photo day, we have your original order and will take your student's picture on Make Up Day. 2) If there is a problem with your student's original photo, we must know IN ADVANCE of Make Up Day, in order to retake their picture.  Place ALL, uncut, individual photos (keep class photo) in the School Photo drawer by the main entrance with a note indicating corrections to be made on Make Up Day.

Sibling photos have been distributed as well.  Get in touch with James Samela of LJ Studios (835-8383) prior to Dec 2 if you want to take a sibling photo in their studio, or need more prints or a jpeg for holiday cards.

  • Go For The Gold - Be an Olympic Reader with PARP, Nov 9 - Nov 23
Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) kicked off this year with grade-wide assemblies on Wed, Nov 9. Murray’s K to 3rd grades saw an entertaining and inspirational presentation by poet Alan Katz, while 4th and 5th graders were motivated by author Matt Myklusch. Look for their books at the Book Fair next week.

For the next two weeks, the kids will be handing in gold “links” for every day they read with parents. This year the goal is to collect 3,441 links to cover the mileage it would take to get from Larchmont to Buckingham Palace, since the summer Olympic Games will be in London this year. If the kids reach the “gold” they will get to choose their two favorite book characters to compete in a Murray Olympics at the PARP finale on Nov 23 on the large playground – parents are invited. Be a reading role model and read with your kids every day. Keep handing in those links so we can reach the gold!
  • It's Time to Play B-I-N-G-O
Parent volunteers are needed for Lunchtime Bingo, to be held  on Tuesdays from Dec 6 - Mar 27. In the winter, 1st, 2nd & 3rd graders have the option to play BINGO instead of recess. You can sign up for 1 day, or as many as you like. On the day you volunteer, your child is automatically selected for BINGO, and they get to bring a friend. The time commitment is only 1 1/2 hours, from 11:45 - 1:15. It is a really fun opportunity to be with your child during school hours. Please e-mail Barrie Kaplan at murraybingo@aol.com to pick your day(s) and with any questions.
  • Stop&Shop A+ Bonus Bucks Program Brings in Bucks for Murray
Congratulations and thanks to the 230 Murray families and friends who have already signed up for the Stop & Shop A+ Bonus Bucks Program — with your help, we raised almost $900 in just one month!  Help us keep the momentum going. If you haven’t signed up yet, please take a moment to register online at: www.stopandshop.com/aplus. Send the link to your friends and family and ask them to register; as long as they have a Stop & Shop card, they can live anywhere and still support our school. Remember, if you participated in the program last year, you must re-register annually. The program runs through March, but the sooner you register the better. PLEASE NOTE:  Murray Avenue School is listed under Larchmont, NY. Alternatively, you can enter our school code, which is 07277. Questions? Please email Ellen Howse at HowseBusiness@att.net.
  • Healthy Hair Update
Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps worked closely over the past year with Mamaroneck Schools’ physician Dr. Ann Engelland and the District’s attorneys in studying our practices regarding lice checks.  As a result, effective this year, Mamaroneck Schools will follow State recommendations and no longer engage in the practice of checking elementary students for lice. Please remember that the best defense against an outbreak of lice is to CHECK YOUR CHILDREN FREQUENTLY, as school is just one of the places lice can spread. Play dates, after school activities, sports teams, etc. can lead to exposure, so it is critical to check your children at home. The PTA Healthy Hair Committee has prepared information to educate you about lice and how you can help with lice prevention efforts at Murray.  For all the latest info on how to check for lice and how to get rid of them, go to the PTA website and click on "Traffic, Health and Safety".
  • Green Tip of the Week
Several states have banned leaf blowers because they represent a serious hazard to human health and the environment.  Hazards include:
  1. Because they operate at such high velocities, leaf blowers stir up mold, allergens, pesticides, fertilizers, asbestos, fecal matter, fungi, lead and carbon that otherwise have been tamped down with rain and decomposition. The dust blown into the air worsens allergies and asthma, and irritates the lungs. Particularly hazardous for children, the dust can drift for three days unseen but inhaled by all.
  2. The toxic exhaust fumes and emissions contain cancer-causing agents. Exhaust pollution per leaf blower is equal to the smog from 17 cars.
  3. The decibel level of each blower exceeds noise safety recommendations and is a danger to the health of the blower operator and the non-consenting citizens in the area of usage.
Several tests, performed in particular by the L.A. Department of Water and Power, showed that areas covered with leaves can be cleaned a lot faster with modern rakes and brooms without sending columns of debris into the air. In addition, organic materials, potentially rich in soil improvement value, will not be lost and will result in greener grass, fertile soil and less fertilizer. Speak with your gardener or landscaper today. Want more info or would like to submit ideas for Green Tips?  Contact Eva Ostafin at eostafin@gmail.com.
  • Thanks of the Week
